Job Opportunity

The Montana Historical Society is seeking a skilled Archival Photographer to capture high-quality images of historical artifacts, art, and documents. The successful candidate will be responsible for photographing and imaging these items using specialized equipment and software, with the aim of producing archival quality prints and digital images.

This role involves working closely with curators, researchers, and other staff members to ensure that all photographs meet the highest standards of quality and accuracy.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operating high-resolution digital cameras, scanners, and lighting systems to create professional-quality images of historical collection materials.
  • Using specialized imaging software to adjust and manage scanned digital images and create reproductions that accurately represent the original objects.
  • Planning and organizing large-scale projects, including in-house digitization, museum art and artifact photography, and site-specific photography in the field.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to ensure that all photographic work meets the Society's standards and guidelines.
  • Managing the photographic lab, including ordering supplies and equipment, maintaining existing equipment, and keeping the lab and studio area organized and clean.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in photography or a related field.
  • Five years of job-related work experience, preferably in a museum or archive setting.
  • Knowledge of photography, including the processes for capturing and duplicating images using cameras and other digital equipment.
  • Understanding of historical photographic materials and their care and handling.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
