Aquatic Management Opportunity

Sydney Zoo's Aquatic Department showcases a diverse range of aquatic species using cutting-edge technology and innovative exhibit design, with a strong focus on animal welfare, conservation, and educating visitors about aquatic ecosystems.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic team at Sydney Zoo in the Aquatic Department, utilising your skills in an area you are genuinely passionate about.

As the head of the Aquatic Department, you will assist in developing relevant operational procedures and protocols, maintaining and calibrating equipment, stock testing suppliers, and aiding in Sydney Zoo research in water quality management.

The position supports Operations, Animal Care, and Veterinary Services to provide exceptional aquatic management and water quality for the animal collection of the Sydney Zoo Aquarium. The Aquatic Department head ensures compliance with all regulatory bodies.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in aquarium management.
  • Experience in habitat maintenance and the ability to review habitats and assess visitor appeal.
  • Experience with aquarium life support systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of freshwater and saltwater chemistry.
  • Plumbing and mechanical skills.
  • Project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing operating environments.
  • Thorough understanding of WAZA conservation and animal welfare strategies and demonstrated knowledge of implementation thereof, with emphasis on the Australasian region.
