The role of Court Coordinator plays a pivotal part in the functioning of the youth justice court system, acting as a representative for the Director-General. The primary function is to provide expert advice and collaborate with departmental staff to maintain high standards of service delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pre-court Preparations: Conduct thorough pre-court preparations in line with established procedures and quality benchmarks, including conducting interviews as required.
  • Risk Assessment and Intervention: Assess risk factors, identify early intervention opportunities, make referrals, and prepare submissions based on written materials.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Foster collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including Magistrates, Judges, legal representatives, police, Community Justice Groups, and community organisations to ensure quality services and outcomes for young people and their families/carers.
  • Post-court Support: Provide post-court advice to young people, families/carers, stakeholders, and relevant staff, while completing documentation and case notes thoroughly.
  • System Maintenance: Maintain office systems, contributing to new system development for efficient court appearances, timely outcome recording, and trend monitoring.
  • Strategic Planning: Participate in strategic and operational planning, reviews, and decision-making as a member of the youth justice service centre management team.
  • Consultancy Services: Offer consultancy services to departmental staff and stakeholders on youth justice court matters, including mentoring, coaching, training, and quality assurance.
  • Professional Development: Undertake professional casework, restorative justice tasks, and other activities as required. Pursue ongoing professional development through training, supervision, and accreditation processes to enhance organisational contributions.
  • Cultural Awareness: Demonstrate cultural capability and/or commitment to developing cultural awareness to promote an inclusive culture aligned with the Human Rights Act 2019 and support departmental programs and community partnerships preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Mandatory Requirements
  • Qualifications: Hold a tertiary degree in social work, behavioural science, social science, criminology, legal studies, or a recognised field.
  • Referee: One referee must be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person attesting to the applicant's background, knowledge, skills, and experience related to cultural capabilities.
  • Driver's Licence: A current 'C' Class Drivers licence is mandatory.
  • Blue Card: This role requires a valid Blue Card due to its involvement with children and young people; refer to the Blue Card Services website for further information.

Applicants should have well-developed knowledge of Children's Court processes, Youth Justice Act 1992, and related legislation, policies, practices, trends, and theories. They demonstrate understanding of casework within a youth justice framework and commitment to early intervention principles.
