About This Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to manage all aspects of the research floor operation and/or shared laboratory/research facilities and research equipment at The University of Queensland.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilities Management
    • Provide oversight and management of the laboratory and office areas.
    • Manage the use of office space and desk allocation for the floor.
    • Interact with various facilities staff from individual Research Groups and the Facilities team to coordinate activities.
    • Coordinate and manage the process for building repairs/alterations and requests, including coordinating the installation of building services such as power points, gas outlets.
    • Coordinate and manage infrastructure, assets, research equipment, communal work areas, and inventory, including conducting stocktakes, audits, procurement, coordinating repair/works, and managing other relevant processes.
    • Act as Floor Warden (floor or building), Laser Safety Officer, Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator (WHSC), and/or First Aid Officer and advise/train staff on HSW and other legislated responsibilities.
    • Participate in the local workplace health and safety committee.
    • Conduct workplace audits and risk assessments to identify hazards and unsafe workplace conditions and work practices and determine and monitor the implementation of appropriate corrective/control measures.
    • Provide inductions, training on specialized equipment/chemical handling, and other relevant training for staff, visitors, and contractors.
    • Train and support research staff with documentation for OGTR, Ethics, DAFF.
    • Maintain records of AIBN equipment, building occupants, and chemicals.
    Lab Management
    • Central Laboratory Equipment Management
      • Management of central AIBN laboratory equipment, including scheduling, supply of consumables, ensuring correct use of instrumentation, providing training, and servicing.
      • Act as liaison between research staff and the Institute's Infrastructure Manager and the HSW Manager, including providing after-hours contact and support.
      • Monitor the use of laboratory space and provide advice to the Infrastructure Manager on space utilization.
      • Facilitate the implementation of testing regimes RCD, Biosafety cabinets, fume cupboards, etc.
      • Coordinate the use of common areas and resources (e.g., laboratory wash-up area and laboratory supplies).
      • Coordinate infrastructure requirements to accommodate the installation of complex scientific equipment.
      • Coordinate research support activities on each floor and ensure their smooth running with streamlined efficiency.

About You

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced professional with a strong background in chemistry, biology, biochemical engineering, or a related field.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree (Honours) in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemical Engineering, or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience.
  • Broad scientific and technical knowledge, including specialist knowledge in Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemical Engineering.
  • Experience in a research environment with a minimum of 2 years in a similar role.
  • Experience in staff supervision, as well as developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment, with a methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work efficiently and organize tasks under pressure with excellent attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with diverse stakeholders, including research staff and students, and contribute to laboratory operations.
  • Strong capacity for forward planning, task prioritization, and meeting deadlines. Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation in work situations.
Desirable
  • Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator Certification.
  • Knowledge of relevant HSW, OGTR, and DAFF Biosecurity legislative requirements and university operating procedures.
  • Specific equipment training highly regarded (e.g., Autoclaves, flow cytometers).
  • First Aid skills and HSW experience.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, mandatory immunizations, first aid, and/or CPR certification, etc.
