Role Overview

Mental Health Practitioners play a vital role in supporting the mental wellbeing of students.

Main Responsibilities
  1. To enhance prevention and promotion activities for student mental health and wellbeing by contributing to school health plans, building staff capability, and delivering programs according to school priorities.
  2. Provide early intervention services for individual students or groups identified as at-risk; and
  3. Coordinate supports for students with complex needs within and external to the school, including working with regions, local mental health service providers, and other health professionals as required.
Key Selection Criteria
  1. Ability to implement group and whole-school prevention and promotion activities to improve student mental health and wellbeing, including capability building and awareness raising activities for staff and/or students on key issues affecting the student population.
  2. Demonstrated ability to contribute to processes and strategies aimed at enhancing mental health and wellbeing prevention, promotion, and early intervention.
  3. Demonstrated experience in assessing, conceptualising, and analysing wellbeing issues, and providing evidence-based direct counselling support to clients with mental health needs.
  4. Demonstrated experience in coordinating supports for young people with complex needs, including referrals to specialist services as appropriate.
  5. Highly developed communication, networking, and interpersonal skills, including liaising effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  6. Understanding of legislative requirements regarding privacy of health information.
Requirements
  • A minimum qualification as a psychologist, social worker, mental health nurse, occupational therapist, or counsellor of a prescribed class.
  • Direct counselling experience.
  • A current Working With Children Check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Specialisation in educational and/or developmental psychology for Psychology applicants.
  • Mental Health Nurse Credential and membership with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses for Mental Health Nurse applicants.
  • Membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers and Accredited Social Worker Trade Mark for Social Work applicants.
  • Better Access to Mental Health Endorsement for Occupational Therapy applicants.
  • Level 3-4 registration (ACA) or Registered Clinical Counsellor endorsement (PACFA) for Counselling applicants.
