Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Microbiologist (Grade 1) to join our team at Alfred Hospital's Microbiology Department. As a key member of our pathology team, you will be responsible for performing microbiology testing according to documented laboratory protocols within acceptable time frames. This is a temporary part-time position, requiring you to work 5 x 8hr shifts (40hrs) per fortnight, including Monday, Friday, and alternate Saturdays, as well as participating in day, evening shift, and public holiday rosters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic microbiology tests, including specimen set-up, culture reading, and interpretation.
  • Work collaboratively with the pathology team to ensure timely and accurate test results.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in microbiology testing and stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and technologies.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities to ensure the highest standards of laboratory practice.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • BSc or BAppSc with a major in Microbiology (or equivalent qualification).
  • Experience in performing diagnostic microbiology testing, including specimen set-up, culture reading, and interpretation.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to organize own work to ensure timely completion of tasks.
