Our Team

Thales' Above Water Systems team specializes in designing, engineering, and providing in-service support for commercial and naval ships. We're committed to bolstering Australia's sovereign capability through operational support to our Navy.

The team boasts over 500 members, with ongoing training programs offering ample opportunities for growth and development.

The Role

A Head of Discipline – ILS Engineering opportunity has arisen within our Garden Island or Newcastle-based team. As a key figure, you'll lead and manage a team of ILS and LSA practitioners and engineers, playing a pivotal role in integrating logistic support throughout the lifecycle of systems on Naval Platforms.

Your responsibilities will include guiding major bids and projects, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and engineering standards. You'll also provide professional leadership and engineering services, fostering the continuous improvement of AWS Engineering.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, mentoring, and developing direct reports, promoting their professional growth within the engineering community.
  • Providing direction and advice on major bids and projects, ensuring compliance with customer requirements and engineering standards.
  • Conducting workforce planning and management for the ILS Engineering discipline, optimizing resource allocation and competency management.
  • Leading engineering activities for major projects and serving as Principal Design Authority when required.
  • Ensuring compliance with Product and Process Policy, managing technical risks, and estimating projects for competitive tenders.

Your Experience

To excel in this role, you'll require:

  • Tertiary qualifications in ILS or a Master's qualification. Chartered Professional Engineer (EA) preferred.
  • No less than 15 years of ILS experience, with at least 7 years focused on Naval or Maritime Platforms.
  • Proven leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to lead technical teams effectively.
  • Demonstrated capacity for continuous improvement and strategic vision.
  • Proficiency in digital toolsets such as IPESA, JIRA, DOORS, Objective, and other relevant software engineering tools.
  • The ability to empower and unite employees around clear objectives, acting as a coach and servant leader.

Estimated Salary Range: $150,000 - $200,000 per annum, depending on your experience and qualifications.
