Ubuntu Security Engineer Role Overview

This position is an engineering-focused opportunity to contribute to the security of open source software and protect users from emerging threats.


The Ubuntu Security Team works with internal teams and external partners to identify, prioritize, and remediate vulnerabilities. The role requires a strong understanding of common security categories and techniques for fixing them.


Key responsibilities include analyzing, fixing, and testing vulnerabilities in open source packages, collaborating with other teams and upstream developers, auditing source code, and building features to strengthen product security.


Applicants should have excellent problem-solving skills, communication abilities, and experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).


The ideal candidate will be result-oriented, driven to meet commitments, and appreciative of diversity and cultural differences.


Required Skills:

  • Strong understanding of common security categories and techniques
  • Experience with open source development tools and methodologies
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages: C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, PHP, or JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Excellent logic, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a globally distributed team
