Framestore is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Compositor to join our Melbourne studio.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of artists, providing guidance and support to ensure high-quality animation and visual effects.

Key responsibilities include working in collaboration with the Compositing Supervisor and Visual Effects Supervisor to evaluate the creative and technical approach to assigned shots, providing direction to the team, and training and mentoring junior artists.

  • Collaborate with the Compositing Supervisor and Visual Effects Supervisor to evaluate the creative and technical approach to assigned shots.
  • Provide direction to the team to ensure the appropriate execution of shots.
  • Train and mentor junior artists.
  • Integrate 2D, 3D, and live-action elements to high-end visual effects film standard.
  • Meet schedules and show deadlines.
  • Act as the key contact for production and supervisors.
  • Take responsibility for the team's workload, time management, and notes/feedback actions required by Supervisors.
  • Balance the creative and technical aspects of each shot.
  • Work with a good knowledge of colour space principles.
  • Establish workflow templates, methods of compositing, and provide documentation for other artists on the team where necessary.
  • Ensure that department tools are available for your team and properly set up for the show.
  • Attend dailies and present the work of your team, guide artists on how to present work.
  • Provide regular feedback to your artists and ensure quality control for the artists on the team.
Qualifications & Essential Skills
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience working in a film VFX pipeline.
  • Previous experience as a Senior or Lead Artist.
  • A strong working knowledge of Nuke.
  • Familiarity with stereo compositing and multiple render passes.
  • A strong eye for detail, composition, colour, and lighting.
  • An understanding of colour space principles.
  • A working knowledge of the overall VFX pipeline.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex topics relevant to compositing and connected departments.
  • Able to work well under pressure and to deadlines.
  • Excellent organisation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with other departments.
  • A pro-active and collaborative work ethic.
  • The ability to multitask, prioritise, and problem solve.
Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge of practical lighting for photography.
  • Experience in dealing and communicating with clients.
  • Programming and coding experience and knowledge.
