Zoo Animal Medicine Expert Leader

This is a senior veterinary leadership position at Taronga Zoo, Sydney, offering a unique opportunity to lead a driven and passionate team in delivering exceptional animal care and welfare.
About the JobThe primary focus of this role involves designing and maintaining preventative medicine programs for the zoo's animal population. As a key member of the Wildlife Health team, you will be responsible for leading an experienced team of veterinarians, vet nurses, administrative assistants, and keepers in providing day-to-day clinical care to sick or injured animals.
- Main Responsibilities:
- Manage the Taronga hospital budget and team, ensuring efficient operations and compliance with veterinary standards, animal welfare, legislative requirements, and health and safety policies.
- Lead a veterinary team regarding professional competency, culture, and engagement.
- Support the development, implementation, and review of Taronga's vision, strategies, policies, standards, and practices for the Veterinary program.
- Provide expertise during design and construction phases of a new Taronga Wildlife Hospital.
- Undertake, assign, and manage clinical cases as required.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary education and training.
We are seeking candidates who possess:
- Tertiary qualifications in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and eligible for full registration with the Veterinary Surgeon's Board of NSW.
- Board certification preferred.
- International candidates encouraged to apply (Visa sponsorship considered).
- Postgraduate qualifications in zoo and wildlife medicine or accumulated experience to a similar level.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in all aspects of veterinary management of zoo and wild animals, including preventative medicine programs.
- Demonstrated experience with species in an open-range zoo setting, such as hoofstock, mega-vertebrates, macropods, etc.
- Experience in treating and rehabilitating wildlife, veterinary management of free-ranging wildlife, and veterinary research.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including people management, building strong stakeholder relationships, project coordination, and problem-solving.
