About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated lawyer to join our in-house legal team at the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC). As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in providing legal and governance services to support the Commission's decision-making processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist multidisciplinary project teams on rule change projects and reviews, drafting and reviewing amendments to the national energy rules in accordance with the energy laws and the Commission's policy directions.
  • Provide legal advice and a legal perspective to facilitate understanding of the options and legal implications on policy matters, informing the Commission's decision-making.
  • Conduct legal reviews of briefings and decision-making documents for the Commission to ensure legally compliant outcomes.
  • Provide broader in-house legal support, including in relation to procurement, policies and procedures, audit and risk, and the Commission's compliance program.
Requirements
  • 2-3 years' experience post-admission.
  • Some experience, as well as a willingness to further develop knowledge and skills in providing accurate, timely, and accessible written and oral legal advice in areas such as statutory interpretation, administrative law, climate change policy and regulation, or corporate governance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, or an interest and willingness to acquire knowledge about national regulatory arrangements for the electricity and/or gas sectors.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills to obtain, analyze, and present information on legal issues and provide legal advice.
  • Flexible and innovative approach to problem-solving, taking into account diverse views and requirements.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a close team environment.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills with an ability to understand complex subject matter quickly.
