About the Role

The Creative Legal Advisor at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne is responsible for providing expert legal advice and delivering a full range of legal services to all areas, including the Chief Executive Officer, Executive team, and Committees.

As part of our high-performing Legal Team, you will work towards achieving SVHM's objectives in the provision of legal services with a focus on effectively managing risk and assisting in achieving desired commercial outcomes.

Your duties will include providing professional legal services and advice to senior management and staff on the legal aspects of hospital activities, such as:

  • Drafting, negotiating, and settling contracts, including Government service contracts, commercial third-party agreements, property leases, loan agreements, private practice agreements for medical staff, and fundraising agreements;
  • Providing independent legal advice under various legislation regarding key risk exposures, including insurances, workplace health and safety, competition law, privacy law, freedom of information, and complaints management;
  • Assisting in matters involving intellectual property, insurance, acquisitions, employment, IT, confidentiality, and correctional health;
  • Collaborating with the research office to review research contracts, including clinical trial agreements, material transfer agreements, IP assignments, and confidentiality deeds, and serving as a legal representative on the SVHM Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC);
  • Supporting the procurement team in requests for tender, procurement vendor agreements, purchase, and servicing agreements;
  • Coordinating responses to subpoenas and assisting in claim management through the legal department;
  • Representing the Legal Team through participation in regular meetings and forums and providing advice to steering committees and meetings as required;
  • Commissioning external legal advice on complex or highly specialized matters;
  • Providing training and education to employees on contractual legal issues and risk management;
  • Reporting timely on legal matters to the Director Legal and Risk; and
  • Mentoring junior team members and delegating tasks to paralegals.

This position is classified within the salary range of $167,250 - $178,400 per annum.
