Senior Science Officer – Integrated Marine Observing System

The Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) represents a national collaborative research initiative, supported by the Australian Government. Operated by a consortium of institutions, with the University of Tasmania as the Lead Agent, IMOS offers a comprehensive, multi-institutional framework for systematic and sustained observation of the marine environment, spanning from the open ocean to the continental shelf and coastal areas, while monitoring various physical, chemical, and biological parameters.

Opportunity Overview

This role involves supporting and executing scientific planning, ensuring the broad utilization of data, and actively seeking opportunities to enhance scientific collaboration, thereby assisting IMOS in achieving its objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate and implement scientific planning for IMOS, engaging with Facility leaders and the wider research community to promote the integration and utilization of data streams through all available channels.
  • Assume a leadership role in data integration to enhance the value of IMOS data streams.
  • Maximize the relevance of IMOS by monitoring scientific performance, identifying and fostering collaborations or partnerships, leading funding applications, and pinpointing gaps or opportunities to enhance IMOS efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Act as a liaison between the IMOS Office, AODN, and Facilities to streamline work plans and ensure data delivery, while collaborating with AODN and Facilities to guarantee that IMOS data complies with national and international standards, including quality assurance and control measures.
  • Represent and advocate for IMOS at relevant conferences and workshops, and engage with researchers, universities, and other key stakeholders as necessary.

Application Requirements

To excel in this position, your application should demonstrate:

  • A postgraduate qualification in physical or biogeochemical oceanography, along with extensive relevant experience (minimum of 5 years postdoctoral); or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Experience in integrating diverse data streams and enhancing research data.
  • Proven knowledge of scientific observation and the application of data to address significant research questions, including the translation of results for end-users.
  • Demonstrated experience in high-level scientific project coordination and management.
  • Evidence of prior experience in facilitating or leading multi-disciplinary scientific collaborations, including successful proposal writing.
  • Ability to identify scientific opportunities for ocean observation to enhance data utilization and impact.

Compensation

This position will be classified at HEO 9, offering a total remuneration package of up to $137,901, which includes a base salary ranging from $111,825 to $117,864, plus 17% superannuation.
