About the RoleThe National Agronomist will play a crucial role in driving the success of Costa's Avocado category by developing and implementing agronomic and technical programs that maximize yields and quality. This position will report to the National Farming Manager - Avocado and Bananas.
Key Responsibilities- Strategic Planning: Create and monitor a 5-year farming strategy for the Avocado category, including farm regeneration, top working, trials, and new initiatives.
- Agronomy Budgeting: Oversee agronomy budgets to ensure alignment with business needs, focusing on long-term CAPEX to drive category growth and introduce Ag tech efficiencies.
- Agronomic Program Implementation: Develop and implement agronomic programs, including pruning, pollination, nutrition, pest and disease management, irrigation, and plant growth regulators to optimize fruit yield and quality.
- Industry Engagement: Engage with industry bodies and technical groups to stay updated on new initiatives and developments in Avocado growing.
- Research and Development: Drive new initiatives across existing orchards by promoting continuous research and development.
- Talent Development: Develop and lead a team of Agronomists across regions, promoting a positive leadership style and coaching to improve performance.
- Compliance and Sustainability: Ensure compliance with government regulations and health and safety standards, while focusing on environmental responsibility and waste management practices.
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- A degree or diploma in Horticulture or a related field.
- Broad agronomic knowledge of horticultural production and continuous improvement principles.
- At least 10 years of agronomy experience, with operational management experience in a large organization.
- Strong business acumen, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and lead a team.
- Excellent communication and planning skills, with a focus on achieving results.
- Good computer and time management skills.
