About the Opportunity



We are seeking a highly skilled Strategic Consultant to join our Australian Defence Consulting team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in delivering strategic consulting projects that drive transformation within Defence's newly established internal consulting function.



This is a unique opportunity to apply your consulting skills and expertise to deliver national outcomes, free from commercial goals. You will work closely with diverse teams of Defence staff and civilian personnel to deliver high-quality work, driving the integration of leading private sector capability into the Public Sector.



As a Strategic Consultant, you will be responsible for:




  • Delivering end-to-end high-quality strategic consulting projects that meet client needs;
  • Applying structured problem-solving techniques to policy and organisational challenges;
  • Facilitating workshops and interviews, analysing data and producing meaningful reports;
  • Helping business areas across Defence tackle critical challenges and deliver on key Government commitments.


You will have the opportunity to shape Defence's approach to internal consulting, pioneering new methods and providing thought leadership and innovative ideas and solutions.



About Our Team



The Australian Defence Consulting team has been established to deliver internal consulting services for the Department of Defence. We are dedicated to delivering market-quality consulting services to strengthen the APS-ADF workforce by building enduring capability across business areas.



We are not here to displace private consulting support or replicate existing roles. Instead, we aim to uplift capability and reduce reliance on external consulting firms where possible. Much of this will be achieved by enabling areas of Defence to be self-sufficient through transferring leading consulting practices and knowledge to the APS and ADF workforce.



Your Skills and Experience



To be successful in this role, you will need to bring:




  • A track record of delivering complex consulting projects and client deliverables to the highest quality and outcomes;
  • Highly developed stakeholder engagement and communication skills;
  • Experience applying structured problem-solving techniques to complex, ambiguous problems;
  • A demonstrated commitment to sharing knowledge, expertise, and developing capability;
  • The resilience to deliver results and manage expectations in ambiguous, high-priority work environments;
  • A passion and commitment for Defence's mission and outcomes;
  • High levels of integrity and a commitment to act in accordance with the APS and Defence Values and Behaviours.


Salary Range



$120,000 - $150,000 per annum (plus superannuation).
