Sydney, New South Wales, Australia General Assembly. Full time

General Assembly is dedicated to nurturing the careers of individuals while assisting organizations in developing exceptional and diverse tech talent. Our strategic learning initiatives have empowered over 21,000 employees at prestigious companies globally, enhancing their digital skills through our corporate training programs. Recognized by Deloitte's Technology Fast 500 and hailed by Fast Company for our innovative contributions to education, we are committed to making a difference.

Instructor Role Overview:

We are in search of a lead instructor for our Software Engineering Immersive course, a transformative educational program designed to equip students with the necessary skills and mindsets for successful careers as web developers. The ideal candidate will possess robust JavaScript expertise and will be a vital part of our expanding instructional team.

This position is remote but requires candidates to have an ABN for eligibility. Please ensure you have the right to work under an ABN before proceeding with your application.

Why Teach Our Software Engineering Immersive?

If you are passionate about making a significant impact by imparting your knowledge of software development to aspiring developers, we invite you to consider this opportunity. Our approach goes beyond mere skills training; we seek educators who align with our vision of fostering a community of lifelong learners pursuing fulfilling careers. As an instructor, you will:

Collaborate closely with co-instructors to guide students through a rigorous and transformative learning experience. Enhance your leadership and mentoring skills by learning from experienced instructors and our exceptional instructional coaches. Motivate and support students as they discover their passions and pursue their ongoing education beyond the curriculum. Customize our global curriculum to suit your teaching style, creating your lesson plans and sharing insights gained over time. Cultivate a welcoming, energetic, and supportive community that accommodates the diverse needs and learning preferences of your students.

Curriculum Focus:

Our curriculum is tailored to reflect current technical trends and the job market in the regions we serve. Currently, our primary educational focus is on JavaScript. The curriculum is structured to follow the historical progression of software engineering, beginning with the fundamentals of programming and web design using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Approximately 25% of the course (typically unit 2 of 4) delves into Rails MVC or similar frameworks, introducing essential concepts such as databases and security. The remaining course units (3 and 4) return to JavaScript, covering API development in Node and exploring various front-end MV* frameworks (Backbone, Angular, Ember, React). Additionally, we address vital topics for junior web developers, including source control, team collaboration, and developer workflows.

Students will engage in hands-on learning, completing at least four major projects alongside smaller assignments and labs. About 20% of class time is dedicated to project work.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

You are a go-to person for colleagues seeking assistance with problem-solving. You are enthusiastic about shaping the skills and careers of the next generation of web developers. You possess a minimum of 3 years of experience in a software development team. You have a solid understanding of Computer Science concepts, including Recursion, Sorting, Searching, Linked Lists, Stacks, Queues, Sets, Trees, Tries, Graphs, Hash Tables, and Design Patterns. You have experience in both front-end and back-end development, with proficiency in: HTML and CSS Full-stack JavaScript (strong JavaScript skills are highly preferred) At least one JS MV* framework (Angular, Backbone, or React preferred) SQL databases (typically using PostgreSQL) NoSQL databases (commonly covering MongoDB and Redis) At least one additional object-oriented programming language (Python preferred)

Responsibilities:

Conduct 16 hours of instruction bi-weekly throughout the program (evenings and Saturdays). Prepare lessons and materials, utilizing existing General Assembly curriculum content for a few hours each week. Collaborate with co-instructors or teaching assistants to provide students with timely and constructive feedback on their progress. Work alongside General Assembly staff and the teaching team to address the diverse needs and learning styles of your students. Guide students in developing an impressive final project that showcases their skills to potential employers. Foster a dynamic, collaborative, and positive classroom environment. Encourage students to persist through the challenges of acquiring new skills.

Unless specified otherwise, remote positions can be performed from approved General Assembly operating countries.
