About the Role

D'Arcy Weil is seeking a highly skilled Energy Law Specialist to join our team in a dynamic and evolving sector. As a key member of our organization, you will play a pivotal role in shaping energy market regulations, ensuring compliance, and advising on legal matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Regulatory Compliance: Advise on regulatory compliance and legal risks in energy market operations, ensuring that all operations comply with relevant legal frameworks and regulatory requirements.
  • Contract Management: Draft and review contracts, agreements, and regulatory submissions to ensure alignment with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Liaison: Liaise with regulatory bodies and government agencies on policy developments, providing expert advice and guidance.
  • Market Rules Changes: Provide legal support for market rules changes and implementation, ensuring a smooth transition and minimal disruption to operations.
  • Legislative Updates: Monitor changes in legislation and assess their impact on operations, providing strategic advice to senior management.
  • Dispute Resolution: Manage legal aspects of disputes, including arbitration and litigation, to protect the company's interests.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams on market design and operational issues, ensuring a cohesive and effective approach.
  • Corporate Governance: Advise on corporate governance and compliance matters, ensuring that the company maintains the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
  • Commercial Agreements: Support in the negotiation of complex commercial agreements, ensuring that the company's interests are protected.
  • Legal Research: Conduct legal research to support decision-making processes, providing expert advice and guidance.
  • Compliance Programs: Assist in the development and implementation of compliance programs, ensuring that the company remains compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Hearings: Represent the organization in legal proceedings and regulatory hearings, providing expert advice and guidance.
  • Strategic Advice: Provide strategic legal advice to senior management on risk management, ensuring that the company maintains a proactive and risk-aware approach.
Requirements
  • Current Practising Certificate: Hold a current practising certificate.
  • Post-Qualification Experience: Minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in energy, regulatory, or commercial law.
  • Energy Sector Expertise: Strong understanding of the National Electricity Market (NEM) and associated regulatory frameworks.
  • Regulatory Experience: Proven experience in dealing with Australian energy regulatory bodies, such as the AER or AEMC.
  • Contract Law Expertise: Expertise in contract law, particularly in drafting and negotiating energy contracts.
  • Dispute Resolution: Experience in dispute resolution, including litigation and arbitration in the energy sector.
  • Analytical and Communication Skills: Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Dynamic Environment: Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strategic Advice: Strong track record of providing strategic legal advice in complex regulatory environments.
