Key Responsibilities:

You will work closely with our Technical Directors and Discipline Lead on national projects in the Rail Traction Power sector. Your primary focus will be on delivering high-quality traction power and earthing and bonding designs, while mentoring and providing technical guidance to junior engineers.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Manage traction power and/or earthing and bonding components of projects, ensuring they meet budgetary, quality, safety, and timeframe targets.
  • Develop AC and DC traction substation system designs, including single line diagrams, layouts, circuit diagrams, earthing and bonding schematics, and coordination with communication, civil, structural, and mechanical design disciplines.
  • Conduct AC and DC traction power system studies, including equipment sizing, fault calculations, and insulation coordination studies.
  • Coordinate traction power systems with overhead wiring and signalling system design, lightning protection system design, earthing system analysis, and design of earthing, bonding, and electrolysis assessment.
  • Develop AC and DC traction protection systems, including analysis, setting, specification, and design.
  • Identify new client opportunities and provide technical input into the bidding process.
  • Provide technical expertise and overview to clients and stakeholders, assisting them through technical decision-making and offering alternative options or solutions as project parameters change.

Requirements:

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

  • 8+ years of experience as a power systems engineer, with at least 3 years of recent experience in traction power system design or equivalent.
  • Tertiary qualification in electrical or power engineering, preferably chartered engineering and RPEQ status.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, including a working knowledge of MS Office.
  • Highly regarded skills include experience in design consultancy roles, leading design teams, delivering traction design packages, working with traction power system modelling software tools, developing complex earthing and induction models in CDEGS earthing system software, developing traction power system models in ETAP or equivalent software tools, developing transient studies in ATP/PSCAD/EMTP, developing EMC management plans, and managing EMC management procedures.

Note that not all these skills are required, and training will be provided to develop them.
