
Crop Development Specialist

We are seeking an experienced Crop Development Specialist to join our team on a full-time permanent basis at our Virginia site located in the South Australia.
The Crop Development Specialist will provide advice to the Farm Agronomy Leader and Farm Managers related to varied aspects of farming, with a focus on developing techniques to increase productivity.
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor level qualification in Agronomy or related field, and minimum of 2 years relevant work experience. Experience in a horticultural operation is desirable, as well as experience in the management of potato, carrot, and onion crops.
The ideal candidate will have strong organisational skills and ability to problem-solve, cultural adaptability and a willingness to work with a diverse range of stakeholders. A strong work ethic and commitment to ongoing learning are also essential.
Flexible work hours are required for this role, in line with seasonal production requirements.
Duties:
- Collect and analyse data and samples of produce, soil and other factors affecting production from various farm locations.
- Develop planting, cultivation, and harvesting techniques, improving crop yield, and solving problems related to farm production.
- Study environmental factors affecting commercial crop production and pasture growth to enable the business to take relevant action.
- Research and promote agricultural strategies for the business to counter the effects of changes in soil, climate, weather, and pest damage.
- Undertake crop visits to collect seed, plant, and soil samples, testing for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes, using these results to advise Management on possible issues.
- Study the effects of cultivation techniques, soils, insects, and plant diseases on crop production and advise on solutions.
- Manage horticultural resources to maximise their long-term commercial and environmental benefits.
- Assist with seed and plant sourcing, testing, and selection, maintaining detailed records regarding fields, suppliers, customers, crops, and samples.
- Generate reports and present findings to management, customers, or other key stakeholders.
- Support the development of planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.
- Investigate planning and implementing management procedures to cope with the effects of fires, floods, droughts, soil erosion, insect pests and diseases on crops.
- All other requirements as directed to achieve business objectives.
Requirements:
- Bachelor level qualification in Agronomy or related field.
- Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience.
- Experience in a horticultural operation (desirable).
- Experience in the management of potato, carrot, and onion crops (desirable).
- Unrestricted Class C Drivers Licence (essential).
- Cultural adaptability and a willingness to work with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- A willingness to be hands on and participate in a broad range of duties, a strong work ethic is essential.

Pay: $60,000 - $90,000 per year
