Housing/Shelter Team Leader – Shelter Support Specialist

This role is responsible for providing leadership and support to staff and residents in a shelter/housing setting.
As a Housing/Shelter Team Lead, you will be the on-site representative when the Site Supervisor is not available, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of staff and residents. You will encourage and foster a collaborative working team which practices effective communication and encourages growth.
The duties and responsibilities of this position include:
- Assisting with all aspects of resident support plan development and delivery of services, in collaboration with the Site Supervisor and support team, if applicable.
- Performing wellness checks.
- Assisting residents with activities such as room cleans; clean out vacant rooms.
- Assisting with appropriate applications and referrals.
- Maintaining an active file for each assigned resident.
- Assisting with laundry as needed and maintaining on-site laundry rooms.
- Supporting residents with developing independent life skills.
- Maintaining a working knowledge and understanding of laws and legislation which affect our residents such as Mental Health Act, Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, Human Rights.
- Utilizing de-escalation skills to mitigate challenging situations and maintain a safe and calm environment.
- Responding to medical emergencies including overdoses. Providing non-emergency first aid such as minor wound care.
- Liaising with partner agencies and other professionals/support teams.
- Overseeing the daily functioning of the shelter/housing site, maintaining safety for all residents and staff in the absence of the Site Supervisor or Manager.
- Collaborating with the team on how to engage residents, utilizing a team approach as needed.
- Ensuring that all room inspections and follow-ups are completed according to schedule.
To succeed in this role, you will require:
- A diploma in a related human, social services field.
You will also need a minimum of two (2) years recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Benefits include:
- Full-time employment with three 12-hour shifts per week.
- Competitive hourly rate, plus additional pay for working overnight, on Saturdays and Sundays, and between 4:00 PM and midnight.
- Eligibility for a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental coverage, after completion of probationary period.
