Job Description

As a Senior FX Technical Director at Framestore, you will be responsible for creating captivating CG renditions of naturalistic physical or magical phenomena. Your expertise will bring wonder to high-end films.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop particle, rigid-body, fluid, cloth, fur, and/or hair simulations or animations.
  • Apply lighting and shaders to produce the final rendered image or pass the simulation on to a Lighting Technical Director.
  • Utilize commercial and proprietary FX tools, including Maya and Houdini.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure shots are delivered to the highest standard.
  • Determine design solutions needed to create effects in partnership with the team.
  • Design and create images, elements, effects, pipelines, tools, and techniques.
  • Help design solutions involving a more procedural approach to create required effects.
  • Produce reviewable composites of all FX elements for a shot, sometimes also producing final renders.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:
  • A strong understanding of Maya and Houdini (or experience in other simulation software).
  • A thorough knowledge of FX simulation and procedural animation techniques.
  • Previous experience producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam, and explosions, as well as simulation techniques for rigid-bodies, cloth, and hair.
  • A good grasp of animation and an eye for motion.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the entire visual effects process.
  • Familiarity with pipeline issues, especially working between multiple packages.
  • A working knowledge of at least one compositing application (e.g., Nuke) and a solid understanding of the compositing process.
  • Strong Python and/or Vex, Mel scripting skills.

Salary Range:
We offer a competitive salary range of $120,000 - $160,000 per annum, depending on your level of experience and qualifications.
