About the Role

Freedom is seeking a Senior Primary Design Engineer to join our team and work on a variety of complex and challenging engineering projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in EHV/HV substation plant design, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects within the power sector.

  • This role is home-based, but you may be required to attend nearby offices or client sites across the UK.
  • Key deliverables include promoting safety through design, performing site surveys, developing concept and preliminary designs, generating and reviewing documentation, and carrying out design calculations.

As a senior engineer in our team, you will be expected to bring technical, ethical, social, and management competence to every job we deliver for our professional clients and key stakeholders.

Key Deliverables
  • Promote safety through design and actively participate in hazard review meetings.
  • Perform site surveys and collaborate with site teams as required.
  • Develop concept and preliminary designs based on tender information.
  • Generate and review general arrangement drawings, substation layouts, single-line diagrams, and related documentation.
  • Prepare and refine technical specifications for designs and equipment.
  • Carry out design calculations to support plant design, including busbar sizing and short-circuit calculations, cable thermal and mechanical force calculations, and compound lightning protection calculations.
  • Ensure timely delivery, effective requirements management, and a "right-first-time" approach.
  • Achieve key performance indicators for design quality and on-time delivery.
  • Comply with project documentation, employer requirements, and industry standards.
Required Skills and Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Degree in Engineering (Electrical).
  • Chartered Status (): Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a professional body such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE).
  • Strong experience in EHV/HV substation plant design.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Health & Safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) desirable but not essential.
