We are pleased to offer two PhD scholarships as part of a research project focused on the African diaspora and Pentecostalism in Australia. The project aims to investigate the challenges faced by African-Australian communities and the role of Pentecostal churches in their settlement and integration.

Project Overview

This project will conduct ethnographic studies with Pentecostal churches in Australia and with African diasporas in the country. The research objectives include understanding the range of challenges faced by African-Australian communities, determining why many members of these communities join Pentecostal churches, and investigating how Pentecostal churches support translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging.

Methodology

The PhD candidates will conduct ethnographic research using qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews, observations, and surveys. This research will provide valuable insights into the experiences of African-Australians and the role of Pentecostal churches in their lives.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants from anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, migration studies, or related fields are welcome. Students of African heritage are especially encouraged to apply.

The selected PhD candidates will have the opportunity to work on an innovative research project, contribute to the field of study, and develop their skills in ethnographic research and academic writing.
