About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Safety Specialist to join our team at APS. As a key member of our Safety Operations team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of our scientists, engineers, and technical experts.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Deliver Complex Safety Advice: Provide professional and expert safety advice and assistance to stakeholders and management across a broad range of hazards and risks.
  2. Implement Safety Management System: Contribute to the implementation and continuous improvement of our Safety Management System (SMS), particularly in areas with plant, hazardous chemicals, workshops, and laboratories.
  3. Identify and Mitigate Hazards: Proactively identify hazards related to complex and bespoke plant and equipment, and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  4. Lead Safety Investigations: Lead and participate in safety investigations, including the delivery of lessons learned, to ensure that we learn from incidents and improve our safety practices.
  5. Evaluate Compliance: Lead and contribute to the evaluation of activities and processes for compliance with work health and safety legislation, policies, and procedures required to achieve our mission.
  6. Communicate Effectively: Communicate proactively with senior leaders and colleagues by highlighting safety issues for their attention, assisting with requests for safety guidance and assistance, and sharing knowledge to influence positive safety outcomes.
About Our Team

Our Safety Operations team is responsible for supporting researchers to implement the SMS in a consistent way across their specific programs of work. We do this through partnering and being trusted advisors with networks to technical expertise and hazard specialists, to work in alignment with the SMS and enable safe research to achieve our priorities.

Requirements

  3. Experience in Research: Previous experience in a research, unique high-risk environment, or government agency.
  4. Effective Communication: Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity, listen, understand, and adapt your communication style to the audience.
  5. Safety Qualifications: Completion of or working towards a formal WHS qualification with the minimum standard being a Certificate IV in WHS, with specialisations in plant safety, auditing and training highly regarded.
