Job Title:

The role of a specimen handler is critical in the Preanalytics Team.

  • Receiving, accessioning, and data entry of specimens for diagnostic analysis.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely processing of samples to support clinical decision-making.
  • Collaborating across departments to maintain high standards in healthcare delivery.

This team plays a pivotal role in ensuring that every sample is handled with precision and care from the moment it arrives.

The Position:

The specimen handler is responsible for determining if samples and request forms are appropriate for analysis.

Specimen handlers also perform a referral role dispatching samples nationally and internationally.

You will need to:

  • Ensure that specimens are handled, stored, prepared and distributed appropriately. Centrifuge specimens where necessary and prepare the required number of accurately labelled aliquots. Ensure that the correct specimen is received in the laboratory for analysis.
  • Assist with the receipt of pathology specimens, including data entry.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis/examination, transport or storage.
