Job Title: Staff Lawyer

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Staff Lawyer to join our team at the Indigenous Justice Centre. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in providing legal representation to Indigenous clients facing criminal charges and child protection matters.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will have a strong background in litigation, with experience in criminal defense and child welfare matters. You will be responsible for providing legal representation to Indigenous clients, advocating on their behalf, and working closely with Indigenous communities and service providers to ensure that their needs are met.

You will also be responsible for developing and maintaining working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers, probation, diversion, crown counsel, and other crown agencies. Additionally, you will collaborate with Indigenous, local, provincial, and federal government agencies and service providers to ensure that clients have access to culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal representation to Indigenous clients facing criminal charges and child protection matters
  • Advocate on behalf of clients for diversion of their legal matters from the formal court system
  • Work with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services that meet the needs of clients
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers
  • Collaborate with Indigenous, local, provincial, and federal government agencies and service providers
Qualifications and Experience:

We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in litigation, preferably with experience in criminal defense and child welfare matters. You should have a strong understanding of the structure and procedures of Canada's Criminal Justice System, including knowledge of the criminal law, Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Gladue principles, and case law. Additionally, you should have knowledge of the structure and procedures of British Columbia's child protection system, including the Child Family and Community Services Act, and Bill C-92 – An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families.

You should also have knowledge of local agencies that offer Indigenous/restorative justice services, and support services to offenders, and to children, youth, and families. Self-motivated individuals with the ability to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented setting are encouraged to apply.

What We Offer:

We offer a competitive salary range of $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience. We also offer an extended benefits package that includes health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans. Additionally, we offer a hybrid work arrangement, with the option to work up to 50% remotely.
