We seek a researcher with a PhD in bioinformatics or microbiology to join our team at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness.
As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and expertise in innovative research and technologies.
You will work on projects that aim to protect Australia against potential pathogens and biosecurity risks, leveraging cutting-edge technologies and approaches.
Your Key Responsibilities Will Include
- Conducting innovative research of strategic importance, leading to novel and important scientific outcomes.
- Developing and optimising robust and rapid high-throughput sequencing workflows and pathogen genome analyses for surveillance and research objectives.
- Planning and designing relevant studies to assess the effectiveness, sensitivity and accuracy of wet-lab protocols and bioinformatics pipelines for pathogen detection.
- Producing high-quality scientific papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for client reports in collaboration with project leaders or domain experts.
- Recording, managing, and analysing data/information using relevant data science techniques.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- A doctorate (or near completion) in a relevant discipline area, such as bioinformatics, computational biology, or molecular virology/biology with a focus on bioinformatics.
- Practical experience with HTS analysis and bioinformatics techniques, such as genome assembly, metagenomics, transcriptomics, phylogenetics, evolutionary or microbiome analysis.
- Evidence of advanced data analytics and programming capabilities in at least one language relevant for bioinformatics (e.g., Python, R, BASH) and experience working with high-performance compute (HPC) servers.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
- High level written and oral communication skills with the proven ability to present research outcomes at national and international conferences and by publication in peer-reviewed journals.
