As a key member of the New York State Audit Division, the Auditor 1 (Tax) plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with various articles of the New York State Tax Law. The successful candidate will conduct on-site field audits and examinations of taxpayers' books, records, and substantiating data to determine compliance with tax laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct audits and examinations of taxpayers' books and records to determine compliance with tax laws and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of tax law, as well as Department and Audit Division procedures and policies.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, taxpayers, and/or their representatives both orally and in writing.
  • Learn and maintain skills in computer technology, including the use of laptop computers, PCs, various software applications, and mainframe applications.
  • Travel frequently, both locally and overnight, to various field audit sites, training classes, and conferences.
  • Represent the Audit Division and advocate disputed cases at conferences and hearings.

Requirements:

  • Meet the minimum qualifications for the position, including a bachelor's degree and relevant experience in accounting, auditing, or taxation.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of tax law and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently and work in a fast-paced environment.
