About the Role

The Work Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for providing expert advice and guidance on WHS matters to the 1st (Australian) Division Command Safety Manager and other stakeholders. This will involve:

  • Strategic Problem-Solving: Identifying and resolving WHS issues, implementing alternative courses of action, and contributing to the planning, development, and evaluation of programs, activities, and initiatives.
  • High-Level Correspondence: Preparing correspondence for senior leadership, ensuring that it is well-written, clear, and concise.
  • Team Leadership: Demonstrating effective team leadership, including managing workflow and resources, and mentoring and coaching others.
  • Research and Analysis: Conducting research and integrating multiple information sources to provide timely and accurate WHS advice and guidance.

About the Team

The Work Health and Safety Officer will be part of the Headquarters 1st (Australian) Division, Business Management Cell (BMC). The BMC provides business and governance management and advice to subordinate formations and to the Commander 1st (Australian) Division. The WHS Officer will work closely with other WHS professionals to provide timely and accurate WHS advice and guidance.

Key Attributes and Skills

We are looking for a candidate with a passion for WHS and experience in providing WHS advice and services to a variety of stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in WHS Advice: Providing WHS advice in areas including governance, planning, policy interpretation, procedures, continuous improvement, incident investigation, and reporting.
  • Integrated Workplace Skills: The ability to work in an integrated workplace with Australian Public Servants, Australian Defence Force, and Defence Industry Support Partners.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: The ability to work with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to provide timely and well-considered advice on WHS requirements in an operational setting.
  • Continuous Improvement: A dynamic and keen approach to continuously improving systems and processes to ensure effective methodologies are implemented across the organization.
  • Technical Skills: Strong skills across the Microsoft Office Suite (or similar) and the ability to develop strong skills in software platforms used to manage WHS&E and WHS&E reporting.
  • Team Experience: Experience in mentoring, coaching, and developing others.
