Logistics Operations Officer

Canberra, ACT, Australia Australian Defence Force Full time
Army General Service Officers are assigned to specific functions shortly before completing their training at the Royal Military College - Duntroon. Role assignments are determined by performance during the training period.

The position of a Logistics Operations Officer (Transport Corps Officers, Royal Australian Corps of Transport (RACT)) involves overseeing and managing Army-owned surface and riverine transport, excluding unit transport, while providing movement control, terminal operations, postal services, and Army-related air logistics support. The Transport Corps comprises approximately 351 officers and 1984 other ranks, representing about 8 percent of the Regular Army.

The Logistics Operations Officer is responsible for the delivery of essential supplies including fuel, oils, food, equipment, and ammunition. The Corps also manages the Army's transportation systems, coordinating land, sea, and air transport to fulfill the needs of the Army and Defence. The Corps encompasses various specializations, and officers can expect to be assigned to at least one, but likely two, of the following areas:

Road Transport: Lead a Troop of up to 50 personnel and 30 vehicles, which may include G Wagons and rigid four-tonne trucks, as well as triple road train semi-trailers. Water Transport: Command a Troop of up to 40 personnel and operate six watercraft, either LCM8 or LARC V, capable of functioning independently for extended durations. Cargo Specialist (or Terminal Support): Oversee a Troop of up to 40 personnel and 20 vehicles, including rough terrain forklifts, 20-tonne cranes, and various wheeled vehicles. This Troop is responsible for logistics over the shore, managing cargo receipt, storage, and forwarding via port, road, air, and rail. Air Dispatch: Command a Troop of up to 45 personnel tasked with packing parachutes, managing parachute equipment, and rigging loads for aerial drop operations; this role may require parachute qualification. This specialization actively supports airborne, airmobile, and airland operations, providing aerial logistics resupply and force insertion. Movements: Lead a Troop of up to 20 personnel. Develop strategies and coordinate the operational deployment, sustainment, and redeployment of up to 10,000 personnel both domestically and internationally.

All Logistics Operations Officers are expected to exemplify high standards of leadership and command, possess comprehensive knowledge of logistics and tactics, demonstrate the ability to swiftly analyze complex and evolving situations, and maintain a detailed understanding of Transport Corps vehicles and equipment, including their optimal utilization.

The Corps has a demand for officers with academic qualifications, stemming from an increasing engagement in system management, computing, fleet management, capability development, and the integration of civilian business practices within the transport sector.

As their careers advance, Regular Officers can anticipate the following employment opportunities:

Lieutenant - Troop Commander and an additional appointment.

Captain - Troop Commander of a larger Troop (90 personnel and 50 vehicles), sub-unit Operations Officer, Second in Command of a sub-unit, Adjutant, Instructor, Movements Officer, UN Observer, Staff Captain, or long-term schooling for a transport or business-related postgraduate diploma or degree.

Major - Squadron Commander, unit Operations Officer, Senior Instructor, Transport and Movements Staff Officer, staff officer, UN Observer, overseas training or exchange appointments, or student at Command and Staff College.

In recent years, numerous Logistics Operations Officers have participated in operational tours of duty in various international locations.
