ABOUT GEMCOSituated on the picturesque Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO operates an open-cut mine responsible for over 20% of the global manganese ore supply. The site is home to the Anindilyakwa people, the traditional custodians of the land, who have partnered with GEMCO since 1963.
WHAT SOUTH32 PROVIDES- 26 weeks of fully paid, or 52 weeks of partially paid parental leave for primary caregivers.

This permanent position operates on a 4:3 roster, with FIFO arrangements available. Residential options may also be considered. As the Mining Engineer focusing on Closure Planning, you will engage with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive 2-year mine closure strategy, ensuring well-defined and executed plans that meet rehabilitation commitments and optimize closure outcomes.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Developing and overseeing the 2-year material movement and rehabilitation strategy aligned with the Life of Operations Plan (LoOP), Tailings Storage Facility (TSF), and closure plans, while providing monthly execution updates.
- Collaborating with the Closure Studies team to enhance rehabilitation quality and facilitate site trials.
- Offering site-specific rehabilitation insights for Mining Management Plans, Disturbance Reports, Closure Cost Estimates, and the LoOP.
- Optimizing the final landform model in consideration of the LoOP material movement plan and closure performance criteria.
The ideal candidate will possess experience and demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
- A strong commitment to safety and continuous improvement.
- Experience with mine closure and landform management.
- Previous roles in similar positions, preferably within an open-cut mining environment.
- Proficiency in mine design and scheduling software (Vulcan, Deswik, and Spry preferred).
- Ability to engage effectively with various teams and stakeholders to gather necessary input and data.
Qualifications required for this role include:
- A tertiary qualification in Mining, Civil, or Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent relevant experience).
