Role Overview

In our BioCORE Facility, integral to our heart research initiatives, you will oversee the welfare of laboratory animals, ensuring adherence to relevant regulations and promoting ethical practices.

This part-time position (4 days per week) involves providing leadership, veterinary services, technical support, and educational outreach across all research areas involving animals, with a particular focus on small laboratory species such as rodents, zebrafish, medaka fish, and xenopus frogs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise the health and wellbeing of animals within the BioCORE Facilities.
  • Deliver expert veterinary and technical assistance for animal-related research.
  • Encourage collaboration among animal care staff, researchers, and user groups.
  • Evaluate animal welfare and environmental indicators, recommending enhancements as necessary.
  • Develop and revise protocols for animal welfare and veterinary services.
  • Assist researchers and user groups with Animal Ethics Applications and reporting.
  • Represent the organization at monthly Animal Ethics Committee meetings.
  • Investigate and manage adverse incidents, reporting findings to the Committee.
  • Conduct regular inspections of animal facilities to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
  • Train research personnel and BioCORE staff to meet animal welfare requirements.
  • Stay informed about scientific literature and industry advancements.
  • Provide consultation via phone, video call, or in person during animal welfare emergencies outside of regular hours.
Candidate Profile
  • Degree in Veterinary Science, eligible for registration in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrated veterinary experience.
  • Experience overseeing the welfare of various animal species used in research, including rodents and fish.
  • Proficiency in surgical and non-surgical techniques, diagnosis, treatment, anaesthesia, and euthanasia.
  • Knowledge of animal research regulations and ethical guidelines.
  • Understanding of containment requirements for laboratory animals.
  • Experience in compliance or regulatory roles.
  • Familiarity with animal research models and best practices.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication abilities.
  • Experience in training scientific and professional research staff.
  • Strong commitment to animal welfare.
  • Availability for emergency callouts.
