Geotechnical Engineer Research Position

This research position is available for a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Tasmania. The project focuses on integrating geotechnical and geophysical testing methods to develop a comprehensive, cost-effective approach for assessing landslide risk in urban environments.

The ideal applicant should have a strong background in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, geophysics, earth sciences, or environmental science. Experience or strong interest in fieldwork, particularly in geotechnical or geophysical site investigation, is also desirable.

About the Project
  • The project aims to generate detailed three-dimensional subsurface profiles of unstable urban slopes using Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW).
  • The research will employ CPT and MASW to obtain high-resolution data and enable non-destructive mapping for broad urban areas.
  • The project is designed for practical application, aiming to deliver real-world solutions for urban planners, engineers, and emergency managers.
Requirements
  • A strong background in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, geophysics, earth sciences, or environmental science.
  • Experience or strong interest in fieldwork, particularly in geotechnical or geophysical site investigation.
  • A willingness to develop expertise in advanced data analysis and numerical modeling.
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary research teams.
Benefits
  • This fully funded PhD opportunity provides a unique chance to contribute to cutting-edge research with real-world impact in the field of geotechnical engineering.
  • Students benefit from a collaborative and supportive research environment, world-class supervision, and opportunities to connect with industry and government partners.
