A key member of the Australian Defence Force healthcare team, Dental Care Specialists support Air Force dentists and dental hygienists in delivering high-quality treatment.

They work in dental chair-side support roles, assisting with treatments under general anaesthesia and conscious sedation, oral health education, practice administration, and other health support duties.

On occasion, they may be required to perform these duties with portable dental equipment, either within Australia or overseas. As a non-combatant role, they are classified as protected personnel under international law during operations.

Dental Care Specialists often serve as the first point of contact for patients seeking dental treatment, requiring well-developed interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication, and attention to detail.

To maintain a safe working environment and deliver quality patient care, they must adhere to stringent infection control protocols.

Their responsibilities may include:

  • Providing chair-side assistance to dentists and civilian hygienists as directed
  • Preparing dental restorative impressions and therapeutic materials for use by the dentist
  • Operating and maintaining all dental surgery equipment as directed
  • Processing, classifying, and mounting intra-oral radiographs
  • Preparing, interpreting, and maintaining patient records on both manual and electronic systems
  • Coordinating and managing dental appointment systems
  • Performing hygiene, sterilisation, and infection control procedures for chair-side procedures, including cleanliness of dental surgeries, instruments, and equipment
  • Assisting with accounting procedures for dental section stores, equipment, and materials

In this role, you can expect a salary of approximately $80,000 - $110,000 per annum, depending on your location and level of experience.
