Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Primary High Voltage Engineer to join our team at SNC Lavalin. As a key member of our power transmission lines and substations design group, you will be responsible for leading and delivering high-voltage substation primary systems design projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and Deliver High-Voltage Substation Primary Systems Design: Develop and implement high-voltage substation primary systems design concepts, from concept to detailed design, for projects up to 500kV.
  • Prepare and Review Design Reports and Power System Calculations: Prepare and review design reports, power system calculations, and other technical documents to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Site Visits and Assessment Surveys: Conduct site visits and assessment surveys to define the scope of work for clients and ensure that projects are executed safely and efficiently.
  • Primary Systems Design and Development: Develop primary systems design, produce Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), high-voltage substation layouts, equipment/materials lists, clearance checks, and short circuit force calculations.
  • Develop Specifications for Procurement Packages: Develop specifications for procurement packages, including equipment and materials, to ensure that projects are executed within budget and to the required quality standards.
  • Lead and Manage Design and Safety in Design Workshops: Lead and manage design and safety in design workshops with clients to ensure that projects are executed safely and efficiently.
  • Attend and Witness Type Tests and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs): Attend and witness type tests and FATs for major high-voltage equipment to ensure that equipment meets the required quality standards.
  • Understand Critical Technical Aspects of Projects: Understand the critical technical aspects of projects, including implementation and integration of complex systems.
  • Assist in Budget Estimates: Assist in the preparation of budget estimates to ensure that projects are executed within budget.
  • Manage Parts of Larger Projects Independently: Manage parts of larger projects independently, including leading and managing a team of engineers and designers.
  • Interface with Interdisciplinary Engineers, Clients, and Suppliers: Interface directly with other interdisciplinary engineers, clients, and suppliers on projects to ensure that projects are executed safely and efficiently.
  • Lead and Manage a Team of Engineers and Designers: Lead and manage a team of engineers and designers as a team leader and mentor.
  • Apply Electrical Engineering Experience to a Range of Projects: Apply your skills and experience in electrical engineering to a range of different projects, including acting as a reviewer or approver of engineering reports, design, and drawings.
Desired Skills, Experience, and Capabilities
  • Relevant Experience in HV Substation Designs: Relevant experience in high-voltage substation designs at transmission voltage levels.
  • Conversant with Transmission and Distribution Industry Standards: Conversant with the transmission and distribution industry, standards, and codes in Australia and/or design experience with electrical utilities in Australia.
  • Skilled in Software Packages: Skilled or able to learn software packages, such as ETAP, CYMCAP, CDEGS, DigSILENT, or similar.
  • Site Support Experience: Site support experience or experience in high-voltage substation projects being constructed and/or commissioned.
  • University Degree in Electrical/Power Systems Engineering: University degree in Electrical/Power Systems Engineering (Masters preferred). Chartership desired.
