Senior Visual Effects Lighting Director

Industrial Light & Magic is a leading visual effects company in the film industry, and we are currently seeking a Senior Visual Effects Lighting Director to join our team.
About the RoleThe Senior Visual Effects Lighting Director will be responsible for overseeing the lighting and rendering of complex shots for high-end photo-realistic visual effects films. This role requires excellent leadership skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with a team.
As a Senior Visual Effects Lighting Director, you will partner with the Lighting Team, Lighting Supervisor, CG Supervisor, Key Creatives, and Production to deliver high-quality results. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Designing and creating lighting and look development for computer-generated objects and scenes.
- Responsible for the final CG scene assembly, lighting, and rendering of very complex shots.
- Working closely with Lighting Supervisors and CG Supervisors to determine the best approach to solving CG challenges and developing the final look.
- Creating efficient rendering set-ups to optimize render farm usage.
- Staying on schedule and meeting set deadlines while maintaining the highest level of work quality.
- Ensuring ongoing communication with Production and Lighting teams regarding schedules and deadlines.
- Mentoring junior artists within the Lighting/Look Development team.

RequirementsTo be successful in this role, you will need:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Graphics or equivalent, or previous professional experience in a related field.
- Experience of real-world lighting and photography.
- Demonstrable advanced Lighting and Rendering experience within a VFX environment.
- Previous experience performing Look Development tasks.
- Prior leadership experience.
- Excellent listening and communication skills, able to receive direction and criticism.
- Excellent aesthetic eye, anticipating potential problems and using knowledge of tools to achieve the desired look.
- Ability to help and teach more junior-level artists.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time well, and provide accurate time estimates on shot task completion.
- Excellent presentation/communication skills in dailies/shot review, clearly outlining what has been accomplished and what should be addressed next in a shot.
- Ability to work within a team environment with minimal supervision to complete a shot.
- Proficiency in writing plug-ins, setting up sequences, debugging simulations, and writing Renderman surface shaders.
- Solid compositing ability, including wrangling blue-screen extractions, working knowledge of Nuke.
- Ability to pick-up new techniques and learn new software quickly and easily.
We offer a competitive salary range of $120,000 - $180,000 per annum, depending on experience, as well as a comprehensive benefits package and opportunities for career growth and development.
LocationThis position is based in San Francisco, California, USA, and requires relocation to the area.
