Energy Markets Quantitative Analyst Role

Job Description: We are seeking a highly motivated and analytically driven recent PhD graduate to join our Energy Markets team in a fixed-term position.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to apply advanced research and technical skills in a real-world energy market context, working across modelling, forecasting, and data analysis.

As a key member of the team, you will support critical business decisions by modelling electricity prices and utility battery operations.

  • Modelling of Energy Markets Dynamics: Assist in developing and executing PLEXOS models for electricity market studies (e.g., capacity expansion, operational dispatch, and reliability assessments).
  • Support scenario analysis, sensitivity studies, and calibration of modelling inputs.
  • Forecasting of electricity demand and prices: Develop and refine demand and price forecasting models using statistical and machine learning techniques.
  • Conduct back-testing and performance evaluation of forecasting methods.
  • Energy Markets Data Analysis: Analyze historical and real-time market data to support modelling, forecasting, and strategic insights.
  • Build dashboards, visualizations, and tools to communicate key market trends.
  • Tool Development & Automation: Contribute to the development of internal Python-based tools to automate modelling and analysis workflows.
  • Support the integration of data pipelines and model execution frameworks.
  • Documentation & Communication: Clearly document models, assumptions, and results.
  • Present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders across the business.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • A completed PhD in a relevant field such as Power Systems / Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems / Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics / Operations Research, Data Science / Computer Science, Economics / Econometrics.
  • Strong technical skills in modelling, data analysis, and forecasting.
  • Experience with PLEXOS or other energy market modelling platforms is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or similar analytical languages.
  • Strong analytical thinking, with a problem-solving mindset.
