Make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people struggling with addiction. Mission Australia is seeking an experienced Drug Support Specialist to join our team in Victoria Park, WA.

About the Role

This permanent full-time opportunity will see you working as part of our Youth Accommodation Support Services (YASS) team, providing support and assistance to young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. As a Drug Support Specialist, you will provide case coordination, brief interventions, informal counselling, group facilitation, and education to young people who are struggling with alcohol or other drug use issues.

You will be based in Victoria Park, working collaboratively with service staff to provide specialized support to address complex cases or emergency situations. This role requires three days a week late shift coverage, with a focus on creating holistic and strength-based individualized AOD support plans for allocated young people.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Complete AOD assessments and intake processes for allocated young people
  • Support young people to create individualized AOD support plans using SMART goals and referrals to supplementary services
  • Work collaboratively with service staff to provide specialized support to address complex cases or emergency situations
  • Able to work until 8pm on three days a week
  • Actively build networks with specialist AOD and Mental Health services and participate in service meetings
Requirements for Success

To succeed in this role, you will require a degree or diploma in Social Welfare/Social Science/Youth Work or a minimum of three years' experience in a similar role. You must have demonstrated experience providing outreach, case management, assessment, counselling, and crisis intervention skills, including working with people experiencing alcohol and other drug use issues, mental health issues, mental health crisis, and working with intoxicated young people.

You will also need to have well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, including report writing and data collection, as well as a full driver's license with no restrictions. Prior to commencing work, you will be required to undergo a national police history check, qualifications verification, and referee checks, as well as clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
