Job Description

The South Western Sydney Local Health District is seeking an experienced and dedicated Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) to provide high-quality services within the Older People's Mental Health Services across the Macarthur/Wingecarribee facilities.

This is a quinquennial (5 year) contract at 0.4 FTE, offering the opportunity to work across both metropolitan and regional settings within a supportive, collaborative, and energetic multidisciplinary team environment.

The role involves delivering specialist psychiatric care for older people, supporting clinical teams, and contributing to service development and improvement.

From February 2026, the successful applicant will supervise a psychiatry registrar, playing a vital role in education, training, and the development of future psychiatrists.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide clinical management and treatment of patients in a SWSLHD facility under your care.
  • Deliver specialist psychiatric care for older people.
  • Support clinical teams and contribute to service development and improvement.
Requirements:

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • A current medical practitioner registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP).
  • Certificate of Advanced Training in Old Age Psychiatry (RANZCP).
  • Demonstrated current clinical practice of a high standard and ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence-based best practice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and risk management.
  • Demonstrated participation in teaching and training at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, including supervision of junior medical staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-education and development, including evidence of participation in continuing medical education/continuing professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with the service objectives of a public health organization, including the provision of services to the local community, effective utilization of resources, and preparedness to participate in the provision of health services at an LHD level.
  • Preparedness to participate in a hospital, service, or LHD on-call roster.
  • Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with other staff and practitioners and in a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
