Job Summary

The Centre for Ecosystem Science at UNSW is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team and contribute to a critical research project focused on improving the resilience of platypus populations. This project is a collaborative effort with Taronga Zoo and aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing platypus population viability and resilience in the face of climate change and other environmental stressors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct fieldwork to collect data on platypus populations, including mark-recapture surveys, environmental DNA sampling, and radio-tracking.
  • Develop and implement a management framework for platypus populations during extreme weather events, including guidelines for translocation and rescue efforts.
  • Collaborate with experts at UNSW and Taronga Conservation Society to analyze data and develop recommendations for conservation actions.
  • Contribute to the development of peer-reviewed publications and present research at conferences.

Requirements

  • Strong background in ecology, conservation biology, or a related field.
  • Excellent quantitative and statistical skills, with experience in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Passion for conservation and a commitment to making a positive impact on the environment.
