Sugarcane Improvement Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Sugarcane Improvement Specialist to join our team.

As a Sugarcane Improvement Specialist, you will play a key role in assessing the commercial potential of experimental sugarcane clones in field trials. You will also be responsible for managing propagation plots for trials and clean seed production for retail distribution.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with our expert team to implement new selection technologies and assist with research projects. With considerable autonomy, you will collaborate with colleagues and industry stakeholders as needed.

To succeed in this role, you should possess a strong qualification in agricultural science or a related field. You should be comfortable working outdoors in hot and humid conditions and have excellent technical skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate sugarcane clones in field trials to assess their commercial viability
  • Manage propagation plots for trials and clean seed production for retail distribution
  • Develop and implement Health, Safety and Environmental strategies
  • Conduct complex technical activities requiring scientific knowledge and professional judgment
  • Interact with industry personnel and grower collaborators
  • Design, plant and harvest field trials and propagation plots
  • Maintain accurate field plans and clone data in our plant improvement database
  • Lead technical staff and manage material resources
  • Contribute to the design and execution of experiments and interpretation of results
  • Present results and recommendations on new cultivars and current clones at industry meetings and field days
