Correctional Counsellor Role

The Correctional Counsellor plays a pivotal role in a multidisciplinary mental health team within a correctional setting.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments of offenders, identifying potential risks and developing targeted intervention plans.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to deliver evidence-based interventions aimed at enhancing coping skills, building resilience, and promoting offender rehabilitation.
  • Manage a diverse caseload of individuals with complex mental health needs, leveraging effective time management and prioritisation strategies.
  • Engage in best-practice approaches to prevent suicide and self-harm behaviour, staying abreast of contemporary research and developments.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of relevant legislation, policy, and procedures related to offender management and rehabilitation.

As part of a multi-disciplinary unit, provide consultation services and accept referrals from colleagues. Maintain accurate records, ensure the safety and security of all parties, and safeguard confidential information.
