Independent Animal Welfare Advocate for Victorian Schools

**Job Overview:**
The Department of Education in Victoria is seeking a highly motivated and independent individual to join the Victorian Schools Animal Ethics Committee (VSAEC) as a Category D member. As an esteemed member, you will play a crucial role in promoting animal welfare and ethics in schools across Victoria.
**About the Role:**
VSAEC members are responsible for reviewing school applications related to the use of animals for teaching purposes and ensuring they meet the ethical requirements outlined in the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
You will work closely with other committee members to advise and recommend ways to support schools in conducting all activities relating to animal care and use according to high ethical standards.
In this capacity, you may be asked to participate in audits of schools to monitor the use of animals in educational settings.
The VSAEC typically holds 4 scheduled meetings per year, which are conducted online, and additional extraordinary meetings as required.
As a member, you are expected to read and assess new school applications before meetings and provide feedback to the VSAEC Secretariat prior to the meeting.
This is a sessional appointment, with a term of up to 3 years, and members may renominate or be renewed at the discretion of the department.
To be successful in this role, you must possess excellent interpersonal skills, be able to listen to and respect diverse viewpoints, and declare any potential conflicts of interest.
We seek individuals who are willing to provide their perspective on school applications and initiatives to promote animal welfare at schools.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Review and assess school applications related to the use of animals for teaching purposes
- Participate in VSAEC meetings to discuss and approve applications
- Provide feedback to the VSAEC Secretariat on applications before meetings
- Work collaboratively with other committee members to advise and recommend ways to support schools in animal care and use
**Requirements:**
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to listen to and respect diverse viewpoints
- A willingness to declare any potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise
- Competency in the use of computers and videoconferencing technology such as Microsoft Teams
- Ability to complete the mandatory 1.5 hour e-Learning module on Animal Ethics Committee developed by Animal Welfare Victoria within the first 6 months of appointment
