Job Summary

Clinical Laboratory Scientists perform testing in a CLIA-certified laboratory. They participate in quality control and assurance activities, and troubleshoot issues.

The role involves planning and organizing work, determining methods and assisting in priority setting.

  • Handle patient samples, analyze test results, prepare reports, and maintain records of test results.
  • Accession samples into the laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • Comply with quality control policies and document QC activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of personal health information.
  • Identify problems that may affect test performance or results and correct them according to established protocols.
  • Document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Teach/train employees on policy, methods, and techniques.
  • Participate in drafting and developing standard operating procedures.
  • Represent the reference lab testing program in interactions with other groups.
  • Investigate and follow-up on proficiency testing, quality control results, and patient testing.
Responsibilities

Clinical Laboratory Scientists are responsible for:

  • Testing patient samples in a CLIA-certified laboratory.
  • Participating in quality control and assurance activities.
  • Troubleshooting issues related to laboratory testing.
  • Planning and organizing work to meet priorities.
  • Determining methods and procedures for laboratory testing.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates must have:

  • A California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license.
  • A BS/BA in a biology-related science.
  • At least 1-6 years of experience performing high-complexity testing in a clinical laboratory.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programs.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, including working with databases and Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
