Culturally Competent Mental Health Professional

This is a challenging and rewarding role that provides recovery-focused, person-centred services to individuals experiencing mental illness, distress and/or risk issues.

The successful applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide assessment, care coordination, intervention, liaison, advocacy and review services. This includes establishing links with the local community and providing high-quality, safe and connected care to consumers and their families and carers.

We are looking for an Aboriginal person who has demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultures and has established links with the local community. The ideal candidate will have a tertiary qualification in a relevant field, such as mental health or social work, and will be registered with AHPRA or eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.

The successful applicant will also possess high-level communication skills, including the ability to engage and collaborate with consumers, their families and carers, and other stakeholders. They will also have high-level computer skills, including accuracy and demonstrated knowledge of electronic medical record programs and Microsoft Office programs.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultures with established links with the local community.
  • Tertiary qualification Bachelor Health Science (Mental Health), or qualifications and current registration with AHPRA for Registered Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, or eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers for Social Workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality, safe and connected care to consumers and their families and carers in a person-centred and holistic manner that promotes self-determination and in context of the principles of mental health rehabilitation, recovery framework and a strengths based approach.
  • Demonstrated high level communication skills with the ability to engage and collaborate with consumers, their families and carers and other stakeholders.
  • High level computer skills including accuracy and demonstrated knowledge of Electronic Medical Record Programs, Microsoft Office Programs including Skype for business.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Mental Health strategic directions in service provision, including those related to Aboriginal People and their communities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the legislation and policies relating to Mental Health care provision.
  • Current unrestricted drivers' licence and the ability to maintain. Ability and willingness to drive/travel as the role requires. This may involve driving long distances and overnight stays.
