Welding Quality Specialist

The Welding Quality Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the highest welding quality standards on pressure vessels and heat exchangers. This is a key opportunity for a professional with a strong background in pressure vessels and steel fabrication to make their mark in a growing industry.

The successful candidate will oversee inspections, monitor welder performance, manage qualifications, and maintain traceability documentation to meet project requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducting visual inspections of welds in line with AS/NZS and ASME codes to ensure compliance and adherence to industry standards.
  • Managing welder qualifications, requalification processes, and maintaining MDR records to optimize efficiency and minimize errors.
  • Monitoring welding processes, consumables, and equipment to guarantee conformity with WPS and maintain a high level of quality control.
  • Recording welding activities in the QC database (Simweb) and project work packs to facilitate accurate tracking and analysis.
  • Mentoring and developing welding staff to enhance skills and reduce weld defects, ultimately driving process improvement.
  • Liaising with day shift supervisors and inspectors to ensure seamless handovers and effective collaboration.
  • Assisting QC/QA teams with documentation and NDT contractor management to maintain a robust quality assurance framework.
Requirements:
  • Trade qualification in welding or fabrication as a prerequisite for this position.
  • Preferably holding an AS1796 Welding Supervisor Certificate 10 or equivalent inspector certification (IIW, WTIA, CBIP, or CSWIP 3.1/3.2) for enhanced credibility.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar role within a pressure vessel workshop plus 5 years' trade experience for adequate expertise.
  • Strong knowledge of AS and ASME welding codes and NDT requirements is essential for effective execution.
  • Proven experience across manual welding processes (GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW) and automated systems (SAW, Orbital, robotic) for adaptability and versatility.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills are required to lead and mentor under pressure, effectively driving results.
