Job Overview

The role of a university council member is crucial in ensuring the university's strategic direction and governance principles are adhered to.

Council members play a pivotal role in overseeing academic activities, reviewing management and performance, and monitoring risk. They are also responsible for appointing and monitoring the performance of the Vice-Chancellor and President.

Responsibilities
  • Governance: Ensure the University is governed in accordance with best practice governance principles
  • Strategic Direction: Shape the strategic direction of the University including the development of its Strategic Plan and approving the University's strategic objectives and key performance indicators
  • Performance Monitoring: Appoint and monitor the performance of the Vice-Chancellor as the chief executive officer of the University
  • Policy Establishment: Establish policy and procedural principles for the operation of the University consistent with legal requirements and community expectations
  • Risk Management: Oversee and monitor the assessment and management of risk across the University, including university commercial activities
  • Academic Oversight: Oversee and monitor the academic activities of the University
Requirements
  • Governance Experience: Experience on boards and/or formal governance qualifications
  • Leadership Skills: Guiding and influencing boardroom dynamics and organisational direction
  • Financial Acumen: Understanding and interpreting financial reports, budgets, and financial risk
  • Legal Knowledge: Knowledge of corporate law, compliance, and governance frameworks
  • Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks
  • Negotiation Skills: Navigating complex discussions and reaching consensus
  • Strategy Development: Contributing to and evaluating strategic direction
  • Sector Knowledge: Sound knowledge of the education sector, ideally in higher education and/or vocational education and training
