We are seeking a highly skilled Systems Engineer to join our team in the Australian Security Accelerator Program.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a critical role in leading national security innovation by participating in a three-month immersive program addressing real engineering challenges for Australian government partners in defence, intelligence, and national resilience sectors. Key responsibilities include:

  • Working on priority national security projects, contributing to systems engineering efforts in architecture design, mission assurance, digital engineering, and technology integration.
  • Applying model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and related approaches to design and evaluate systems supporting Australia's defence, intelligence, and whole-of-government security initiatives.
  • Supporting sponsor engagement activities, collaborating with technical teams, program managers, and operational users to ensure alignment with mission objectives and stakeholder needs.
  • Building systems engineering artifacts such as architecture models, interface definitions, requirements traceability matrices, risk assessments, and decision analysis products.
  • Gaining practical exposure to systems engineering tools and frameworks, including SysML, MagicDraw/Cameo, and digital engineering environments.
  • Learning how national security priorities drive capability development and technical delivery across Defence and Intelligence agencies.
  • Collaborating with Australian-based and international teams, deepening understanding of allied engineering approaches and the MITRE ecosystem.
  • Receiving structured mentorship from senior engineers in Australia and the U.S.
  • Participating in a two-week immersion at MITRE's U.S. headquarters, gaining insight into MITRE's global impact and engineering culture.
About You

To be considered for this opportunity, you should possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7 or higher) in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Early to mid-career experience, including recent graduates with strong academic foundations or those with several years of relevant professional experience.
  • Working knowledge of systems engineering concepts such as requirements analysis, architecture development, lifecycle planning, and system validation.
  • Exposure to or familiarity with MBSE tools and techniques (e.g., SysML, Cameo/MagicDraw, or similar platforms).
  • Strong critical thinking and structured problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Government NV2 security clearance.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, including for the two-week U.S. immersion.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Please note that while a Bachelor's degree is required, we also welcome applicants with Honours, Master's, or PhD degrees in relevant technical disciplines or 5+ years of relevant post-Bachelor's professional experience.

Additionally, if you have hands-on experience supporting or leading MBSE, digital engineering, or architecture modelling in government, defence, or critical infrastructure domains, or familiarity with Australian Defence capability frameworks and acquisition processes, we would like to hear from you.
