About the Role

The APS 4 Data Solutions Programmer position in the Directorate of Governance, Performance Analytics and Reporting (GPAR) is responsible for identifying opportunities for streamlining data processes across Security & Estate Group (SEG). This role reports to the APS 6 Business Intelligence Officer and is part of the Data Analytics function, which delivers Business Intelligence analysis expertise across SEG.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize Power BI, Excel, and other Defence tools to generate data visualisations and solve data problems.
  • Develop data linkages, transformations, and various efficiencies using Python.
  • Ensure the ethical use of data and interpret and comply with legislation, Defence policy, and regulatory frameworks, including data management requirements.
  • Communicate complex technical information in a succinct manner to stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Resolve problems using knowledge, professional judgement, and initiative to identify and recommend alternative courses of action.
  • Work collaboratively and operate as an effective team member, actively participating in organisational activities.
  • Perform data management and administration work to support delivery of activities across SEG.
  • Develop an understanding of Defence's corporate requirements, including relevant legislation, work practices, and procedures necessary to achieve work area outcomes.

About the Team

The Data Analytics team in GPAR enables and supports the SEG Senior Leadership Group to discharge their legislative obligations, accountabilities, and responsibilities. The team is based in both Canberra and Melbourne, with a concentration of the Program Management and Governance (PM&G) branch in Canberra. This geographic distribution allows the team to leverage diverse talents and perspectives while ensuring strong coordination and communication within the PM&G branch.

Requirements

  • A passion for programming and working with data.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, knowledge of data analysis tools, and a good understanding of data analysis processes.
  • Proficiency in Python programming language.
  • Ability to identify gaps or pitfalls in processes.
  • Upholding data management and privacy responsibilities diligently and with discretion.
  • Data storytelling skills and the ability to communicate complex insights in a practical fashion to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong technical skills and willingness to act as a resource for others.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Flexibility, self-motivation, resourcefulness, and a willingness to learn.
  • Able to hold and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.
