About this role:
ActionAid is looking for 1-2 Community Organisers to lead and manage local ActionAid groups in Melbourne and Sydney. The selected candidates will work closely with the Policy and Campaigns Team and the broader Activist Network.
The Community Organisers will oversee their local group, its activists, and coordinate campaigns to achieve impact in their communities.
ActionAid Australia is part of a federation working globally to advance women's rights and end poverty and injustice. It supports women on the frontlines of injustice overseas and campaigns in Australia for climate and economic justice for women.
Our strategy includes building people power through local ActionAid groups. Our analysis shows that existing systems trap women in poverty and injustice, so we campaign, organise, and act in solidarity to shift systems in support of gender equality and justice.
Time Commitment: 2-4 hours per week. Minimum 12 months commitment.
Location: Melbourne/Sydney (both face-to-face and online).
- Work with the Community Organiser and the Activist Support Volunteer to coordinate your local ActionAid activist group.
- Check in and report back to the Community Organiser monthly.
- Organise and lead regular Activist Group trainings, planning sessions, and meetings.
- Support the local group to set objectives and roles to support coordination (e.g., secretary, well-being coordinator), make campaign plans, and project manage and organise actions within a limited budget.
- Receive updated campaign strategies and plans and inform local group members.
- Identify and develop activists who can be potential leaders in their community.
- Manage volunteering enquiries and conduct inductions with new volunteers.
- Track engagement, meetings, events, and actions of your local group.
- Work with the Community Organiser to identify potential leaders and hand over to the next Community Organiser when transitioning out of the role.
Selection Criteria:
- A time commitment of 12 months, up to four hours a week.
- A passion for community organising and building people power in communities across Australia.
- Confidence with interviews and intentional conversations with new volunteers to commit them to action (support will be provided).
- Some experience in volunteer coordination (although not necessary).
- New activists should be able to count on you for regular check-ins via phone/Zoom calls, introducing them to ActionAid Australia and support with challenges.
- Respect for ActionAid's independence and ability to work within this ethos.
- Demonstrated commitment and passion for women's rights; and adherence to the principles of feminist leadership.
- Flexibility to work face-to-face and digitally.
- Self-drive and initiative to organise actions and local events to campaign on ActionAid campaigns on climate justice for women and economic justice for women.
We offer training and inductions to equip you for this role. You will have the opportunity to work alongside the Campaigns and Policy team, and gain exposure into campaigning and organising.
We actively encourage applications from women, people with disabilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, People of Colour, LGBTQIA+, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
